Despite Loss Trotwood Grad Sends Statement vs Wright State

 Despite the Loss, Trotwood Grad Amari Davis shows Wright State that they Continue to Drop the Ball;

Davis Erupts for 35 in Raiders win

By Deon Cash

Amari Davis, one of the elite players in the Horizon League in only his sophomore year, put on a absolute show at the Nutter Center last weekend.

His Wisconsin Green-Bay squad lost to Wright State, as the Raiders used a balanced scoring effort to take down Green Bay. Horizon League Player of The Year Candidate Louden Love, the Raiders star big man, led the way with another big effort (19 pts).

However, despite the loss, the stage was all Davis, in his second visit to the Nutter since committing to Green Bay.  The smooth but explosive 6'5 guard showed why, in another year or so, the NBA could and should come calling, as Davis torched the Raiders defense all night to the tune of 35 points.

He also silenced the pro experts and naysayers, who said he didn’t have NBA range, as he went 7-9 from  3-point range a week ago, and dropped a couple more in the game to show that his whole game has expanded.

Wright State, who has been one of the elite teams in the Horizon League over the Scott Nagy tenure, had a real chance to grab Davis, the OHSAA D-2 Player of the Year his senior season at Trotwood. Davis would also lead the Rams to a state championship as they erased the demons and hoisted the trophy just 2 years ago.

While en route to that championship, he displayed his talent at the Nutter Center, right in front of the Raider coaches, scout department, upper management and alumni.

Coach Nagy and his staff, who have recruited sparingly in the city of Dayton, decided that they didn’t need Davis, or Myles Belyeu, Amir Foster, or Torrey Patton for that matter. When it came to Trotwood, the Raiders passed on all of their recent elite recruits, along with Dunbar, Thurgood, and Wayne for that matter.

When you look at the top players over the last 3 or 4 years they are all achieving great success either in the Horizon League or in other leagues.

Here are a list of names that the Raiders have passed up on:

Myles Belyeu, Trotwood; Saginaw Valley

Isaiah Trice, Wayne; Sinclair CC

 Darius Quisenberry, Wayne; Youngstown State

 Darnell Hoskins, Thurgood; Saginaw Valley

 Caleb McConnell, Dunbar; Rutgers

 Devon Baker, Dunbar; NC Wilmington

 Torrey Patton, Trotwood; Cleveland State

 Deshon Parker, Wayne; Appalachian State

 Evan Clayborne, Thurgood; Cleveland State

 The amusing part about it?

Quisenberry, Davis, and Patton will all probably be 1st Team All-League. And all 3 were seriously considering Wright State as a option.

Nagy and his staff have really never admitted that they have dropped the ball on a couple of these guys. But in reality, this is the difference between the Raiders becoming a mid-major powerhouse or just being a solid team in the Horizon League.

While it is good that the Raiders are one of the top teams in the conference, the general basketball purists and fans in Dayton can’t really relate to the Raiders, simply because there isn’t ever any elite homegrown talent on the team.

While Wright State seems to be ok with this strategy, for some reason, until they get some local flavor, nobody in Dayton will take the Raiders seriously until they start grabbing elite talent from the inner city, specifically from the communities of Dayton, Trotwood, Huber Heights.

And that, in a nutshell,  is why the Dayton Flyers don’t entertain the Gem City Battle anymore.

While the Raiders remain good, they remain irrelevant in the main scope of sports in dayton, simply because they continue to pass on possible pro prospects year after year.

Will Nagy and his staff finally step up? While there aren’t many Amari Davises out here, there are some new stars in the fold on the way. Will the Raiders continue to drop the ball and opt out on local talent? Will we continue to see supreme talents like Davis, Patton, and Quisenberry play in the same conference, with fire in their eyes and a real reason to stick it to the Raiders?

 Stay tuned.

 In the meantime?

Salute Davis, the respectful, calm young man with a savage demeanor on the court who showed not only Wright State, but the entire conference and NBA scouts that he is closer to being NBA ready than most think.

Put this kid on the NBA radar right now.

“It felt good to come back and play really well, but we wanted the win." Davis said.

Spoken like a true champion.

Its Official: DPS Athletic Director steps Down to become Principal; Who’s Next?

Its Official: DPS Athletic Director steps Down to become Principal; Who’s Next?

After 2 years of running the Dayton Public Schools District, Athletic Director Shawna Welch has stepped down to take a Principal position, leaving the position open once again.

However, it seems that there will be a new athletic committee that will be apart of the decision making process in the future when it comes to sports and sports related events regarding DPS.

While people will question this method, it actually makes sense, as there were some major issues in recent years that needed to be tackled by more than one person. While Welch didn’t do a amazing job in her 2 year stint, she didn’t do a horrible job either. It was more of the lack of inspiration to move the program in the direction that was needed – and wanted – by the Board which led to the undoing of Welch as AD.

Welch, in all honesty, was thrust into the job after the previous AD was bought out of her deal. She will now be a principal at a middle or elementary school, which is a role that she was accustomed to being in.

While it is not determined who will replace Welch, there should be stronger leadership within DPS Athletics and a solid committee would help that process. They have made positive progress in recently.

Tune into Dayon HS Sports Show this Sunday on Fox Sports as we talk about whats next for DPS Athletics.

MEADOWDALE LEGEND LANDS COACHING JOB FOR BEARCATS; KNOX SET TO WORK WITH WOMENS BASKETBALL TEAM

MEADOWDALE LEGEND LANDS COACHING JOB FOR BEARCATS; KNOX SET TO WORK WITH WOMENS BASKETBALL TEAM

Carlos Knox, one of the greatest players to play for Meadowdale HS and Dayton Public Schools,  has agreed to become an Assistant Coach at the University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team for the upcoming season.

Knox, who was at North Texas the last few seasons, decided that this was a chance he could not pass up. “I’m excited for the opportunity to come back to Ohio and do what I love to do.” Knox stated.

Knox was one of the best players to ever play in Dayton Public Schools history as he led the Lions to a state ranking and unprecedented success during his junior and senior seasons. He was an all-city and all state performer before going to IUPUI and starring there as well.

Knox would eventually get on a NBA roster, playing for the Indiana Pacers at one time. Despite not being able to last in the NBA, Larry Bird, one of the greatest players in NBA history, gave a amazing review on Knox on his game, which helped Knox get other pro deals.

Knox had a Steph Curry - type release on his shot with a Iverson like crossover in his game. He was a feared offensive player and set multiple scoring records on his way to a Hall of Fame career at Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis. Most experts and basketball minds think that if the NBA wasn’t so rigid on how tall players had to be for certain spots back in the late 90's and 2000’s?

Knox would have made the NBA. Easy.

His skill set was that good. Now Knox, who has been coaching with the likes of the Indiana Fever, North Texas and other teams, embraces the challenge of making college kids better. “I’m looking forward to joining the Bearcats staff and making a difference” Knox said.

Knox has joined the staff for the 2020-21 season, whenever that will start, due to the Covid-19 that has shut down the entire country.

Knox will tell the story of how he got to Cincinnati on the S.E.Live365 Show on Fox Sports Dayton on Sunday morning (8-10 AM)

Gone But Not Forgotten; Don Black Passes, Leaves Amazing Legacy

MEDIA GIANT GONE, BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN

DAYTON WEEKLY CEO DON BLACK PASSES;  LEAVES LEGACY THAT WILL LAST FOREVER

Deon Cash (L) standing, with Media Legend Don           Black (R) sitting at Dayton Weekly Headquarters

One of the true pioneers of Media in the Dayton community passed away earlier this week.

Don Black, the CEO of the ultra-successful and groundbreaking media outlet The Dayton Weekly Newspaper, died from health complications.

Black, who helped make the Dayton and Southwest Ohio community become much more aware of the talent that was being overlooked in the African American neighborhoods, started his own media brand in the 70’s.
He launched his first company, Black Associates Photography, Inc., in the early 1970s. It would be changed to Multi-Western PR / Marketing in 1979.

Black was a true visionary, and a extremely hard worker. He rarely took days off, and it was evident even later in his career as he was involved in a myriad of different organizations.

For Black, it was mostly to create opportunities and positive exposure for African-Americans.

I met Mr. Black at Dayton Television (DATV) when he was doing his critically acclaimed TV Show about 4 years ago. As someone trying to find my way myself, he gave me some encouraging words which I would heed.
So much so, that I would end up working for the Dayton Weekly, under Mr. Black, as a freelance sports journalist just months later.

It would be my first job in the Media world.

We would meet every week, and Mr. Black had a game plan every week. The cool thing about Mr. Black, was that if you had your plan intact he’d let you implement that as well. He would let you grow and develop as a writer or reporter and let you put your own spin on a topic or story. He was a motivational expert, and his “Matter of Fact” bravado and speeches was simply from a man, who had seen it all, had done it all, and seemingly was wise beyond his years.

Working with some of the legends in entertainment, politics, and sports, it put Black on a optic level few African-Americans could reach in Southwest Ohio.

The Chicago born Black would start his last big venture, the Dayton Weekly Newspaper, in 1993. This Newspaper still is one of the most popular streams of media in Dayton today and currently provides news to thousands of loyal customers in Southwest Ohio.
The Weekly just celebrated 25 years of service to the Miami Valley.
The Weekly is now being run by his son Donerik, as the brand looks to continue the legacy that his dad started. The Newspaper has already merged with a business to produce a online website and content.

Black, here with his new endeavor,                                        Dayton Weekly Newspaper

Some of the organizations he was heavily involved in were:
The Greater Dayton Association of Black Journalists, Ohio Governor's Conference of Minority Business, the Dayton National Business League, the Dayton Minority Enterprise Small Business Investment Company, Kettering Medical Center, Bank One, the Dayton NAACP and Dayton Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

His right hand man, and son, Donerik Black, who now is CEO of the Dayton Weekly News, had this to say about his father as he passed:

“Today my hero took his last breath at 5:08 p.m. at Hospice of Dayton, surrounded by me, my sister, his granddaughter, daughter-in-law and holding hands with my mom, his wife of 53 years. Words can’t describe the heaviness I feel in my heart right now. I have a void in my soul and I have no idea how to fill it. But if I know my dad he would make me promise to get the paper out on time and make sure that there are lots of pictures. So I’m going to mourn the loss of the man who gave me life and opportunity tonight, but tomorrow I’m getting back to work because I know that’s what he would want me to do.”

Spoken brilliantly,  like a son who was prepped to take the reins from his dad.

Rest in peace to a man who dedicated his whole life to making sure that the Black community and people like me, his son, the Dayton Weekly family, and other African-Americans had a real opportunity to make a impact in the world today.

Thank you Mr. Don Black for taking me under your wing and showing me the ropes. I will forever be grateful.

Black was 74 years old. He leaves a son, a daughter, a wife, and a amazing legacy that will be cherished for decades.
Respect to one of the media greats.
