Chaminade Hammers Fenwick, Moves To 5-2 on Coach White Birthday

Chaminade Hammers Fenwick, Moves To 5-2 on Coach White Birthday During Homecoming Weekend

The Chaminade-Julienne Eagles had took a tough loss to the chin last week, and was humbled after a winning streak had pushed them to 4-1.

Fenwick had lost a tough one to Badin as well, so both teams were 4-2 coming in to a big Thursday Night Lights matchup.

Which team would rise to the occasion?

It would be C-J, as they would punish Fenwick with the ground game and the defense causing turnovers to a tune of 48-20.

It was Eagles head coach Earl White birthday on top of that.

"We wanted to set the tone." Coach White would say after the game.

And that they did, as they would amass a 60-yard run on the opening play, and wouldn't stop until they had put up a 35 spot at half (35-7). The running game amassed over 200 yards in the 1st half alone.

After C-J took a 7-0 lead Fenwick would throw a interception in Eagles territory,  which Chaminade would turn into a TD.

Then Fenwick would fumble on the next series, and C-J would score again, and at the end of the 1st quarter it was 21-0.

Fenwick would fumble again, which Chaminade would recover, and score again to make it 28-0 before Fenwick would finally get on the board with a TD of their own to make it 28-7.

Chaminade would score one more time, late in the 2nd half to push it to 35-7 at half.

With the win, Coach White now has the Eagles in prime position for a playoff berth with 3 games remaining. They sit at 5-2 with Carroll, Badin and Alter rounding out the regular season.

Fenwick falls to 4-3 and despite having a host of players out due to injury, will look to turn it around next week.

It was Homecoming for the Eagles and they were in full force for the festivities on a perfect night weather wise (high 60's, no breeze, no rain).

Colonel White Hoop Legend Anthony Talley Leaves Lasting Legacy

 Colonel White Hoop Legend Anthony Talley Leaves Lasting Legacy;

Most Underrated Player in DPS History?

by Deon Cash

Anthony Talley, one of the most talented guards in the 90's, was possibly the most underrated player in Dayton and OHSAA history.

Talley passed away last week due to health complications. He was 48.

Nicknamed AMP, which he had on his jersey, Talley was a super smooth but extremely explosive guard who could legitimately play both guard positions at 6'2, and was a absolute dynamo during his time at Colonel White in the mid 90's.

In his sophomore year, he dropped 36 on Patterson, which featured the likes of Allen Spears, Deon Patterson, and that elite team coached by Bradley.

He went toe to toe with DPS all time leading scorer Richard "TuTu" Brown and "Boomer Bozeman," one of the top backcourts in Dayton Public Schools history.

Early in 1993, there were reports that Talley would be back for his senior season. But it wasn't until people seen him in school that they knew that Talley was back.

And with that came one of the greatest seasons in Colonel White and Dayton Public Schools history.

The Cougars would end up 16-4 on the season, and would be ranked as high as #4 in the OHSAA State polls. The team would amass the highest scoring ppg in DPS, and Dayton HS history at 89.6 ppg, which was absolutely insane in that time.

That 93-94' team was also ranked as high as #17 in the USA Today Basketball Poll, which was the highest ranking ever for a Dayton Public School. And still is.

The points per game still ranks as a Top 5 all-time average ppg in OHSAA history.

Remember, this was a time where the game was transitioning into a full court fast pace type of game, where colleges such as Arkansas "40 Minutes of Hell" and Loyola Marymount high.scoring antics were just making its way onto the hoop scene.

Colonel White coaches, Tom Clements and Billy Staten were the leaders of the new way of play.

We wanted to push the tempo because we had so many weapons, and we wanted to wear teams down." We did that very well and Talley was the leader of the pack." Staten said recently.

"We had some great talent on that team. That team was arguably the most talented team Colonel White has ever had."

"While the Hoggie and Jervaughn Scales state led team was extremely talented as well, this team had all the pieces and was just as talented. We just couldn't finish the deal."

Talley would miss his entire junior year from playing high school ball.

However, in his senior season, he came back with a vengeance. He averaged 25ppg while dropping dimes, slamming on all types of players, hitting 3's with range, elite ball handling, and being a savvy leader, with his signature smile and swagger.

And on a weekend in December, Talley also was the leading scorer in the highest scoring game in OHSAA history.

Talley would drop 35 points in a scintillating thriller between Colonel White and Sidney that ended up being a instant classic as the Cougars beat Sidney 130-122. That game still sits as the highest scoring game in OHSAA history 30 years later.

The game will be honored by coach Clark in Sidney in December during the basketball season.

"Anthony Talley was one of the greatest players I ever seen in high school." Coach Clark, who was the head coach of Sidney at the time, stated.

"Just a amazing ball player."

And don't forget to mention the clutch gene he seemed to have, which was Jordan-esqe.

When the game was on the line, Talley was the guy. And he most always delivered in the clutch. Just ask any coach who witnessed it or player who played with or against him.

I had the honor of playing with Anthony Talley in my high school career. It was one of the greatest years of my life and truly a honor to play with the guy. He is the most naturally gifted guard I ever seen. Sometimes you would be watching him on the court, even though you were playing with him.

He would go on to play in JUCO in California (Oxnard) and in Nevada, and in his only full season he led the entire California juco league in scoring. The Seattle Supersonics literally had Talley on their radar.

He would come back to Ohio after his stints with the colleges out west.

A great player, but a even better person. Was a family guy, and stayed close to his loved ones and friends.

Rest in power Amp.

Talleys' services will be held at Thomas Funeral Home today at 1pm.

With a schedule that starts at 6am for the event, Howard knows his team is second to none.

"I want to give a special thanks to the Making Memories staff, who helped make this event special. Without them this would not be possible.

Howard would say after the event at the Check Presentation at The Dayton Foundation.

The event would start at 8am. Despite a little drizzle early, the bad weather held off and the golfers were able to get in a good round of golf.

The event ended around 5pm and included awards, breakfast and lunch and honored some great raffle prizes as well.

With special guest speakers such as Ron Todd, Mayor Jeffrey J Mims and other esteemed public figures, great messages were divulged during the closing ceremonies.

If you are looking to sign up for the 10th annual Making Memories Classic, or for more information,  reach out to Cedric Howard and / or  Making Memories Classic. There's a page on Facebook for Making Memories as well.

"We're already looking forward to the event in 2024. We have spots available. Howard stated.

Troy Overcomes Sloppy 1st Half, Stays Undefeated Against Butler on Thursday Night Lights

Troy Overcomes Sloppy 1st Half, Stays Undefeated Against Butler on Thursday Night Lights

By Deon Cash

The Troy Trojans had their way the first two games of the football season, as the running game powered its way to two blowout wins in the process.

However the Butler Aviators came out and showed they wasn't the same pushovers they had been in previous seasons and played the Trojans with physical defense and intensity from the start.

While offensively Butler wasn't able to get much going, they were able to shut down the vaunted Troy offense that had been unstoppable in the previous two games, as RB Jahari Ward had run wild. Butler would walk into halftime in a scoreless game.

Troy, on the other hand, had to be a little disturbed that they had 2 touchdowns called back (due to penalties) and a missed field goal to boot at the end of the half.

In the second half it was a different story, as the Trojans would score on its first possession and wouldn't look back en route to a 16-7 win in front of a packed home crowd in week 3 of Thursday Night Lights.

Butler would score to make it 14-7, and would also have a chance to tie the game with the ball late in the game.

But Troy would get a sack in the end zone with less than 2 minutes left in the game, which would end Butler's comeback hopes.

Butler falls to 1-2 on the season, while Troy moves to 3-0 and stays in 1st place in the Miami Valley League.

Jahari Ward would run for 75 hard earned yards to lead the offense. While the "Aiden Connection" was gold, as Kirpatrick to Gorman resulted in a 44-yard TD pass helped lead Troy to a win.

Star LB Devon Stobel led the Trojans with 7 tackles, a sack, and 3 Tackles for loss.

Butler only managed 130 yards of total offense in the loss. Kaiden Bates ran a 10-yard TD to lead the offense while LB Sam Mitchell had 9 tackles, 3 Tackles for loss and a interception to lead the Butler defense.
